Practice

The goal of practice is to have continuous improvement. Practice should be a part of your daily routine. Minimum practice guidelines are as follows:

Elementary 20 minutes a day or 2 hours a week
Middle School 25 minutes a day or 2.5 hours a week
High School 30 minutes a day or 3 hours a week

I spend a lot of time at lessons directing the student in how to practice. Many students want to “Play” the piano, but they do not realize that in order to “play” they must first “practice”. It is fun to “Play” and it is work to “Practice.”

Success comes to those who practice SMART
(Slowly, Methodically, Artistically, Regularly, and Tenaciously).

I drill into students the concept of “Divide and Conquer.” This method encourages students to practice in small parts rather than just reading through the entire song and not working at difficult passages.

The studio policy is to “Practice until you can’t get it wrong.”
